HOME Line brimming with “Heroes of the People” this summer

by Dana Mackey, Public Policy Intern on 10 May 2010

Note from Michael Dahl, Public Policy Director:  HOME Line’s Public Policy Department is indebted to its interns.  They are the lifeblood to much of our research, organizing, and advocacy.  I frequently dub them “Heroes of the People.”  This summer is no exception.  At last count, HOME Line will have 150+ hours of change-makin’ volunteered each week by at least half a dozen Public Policy Interns.  Here’s a teaser of what one of this summer’s heroes will be up to:

My name is Dana Mackey and I am thrilled to be working as an intern at HOME Line this summer. I am a Political Science major at Carleton College and I am committed to helping Minnesota’s renters while learning more about affordable housing projects in the Twin Cities.  After meeting with Michael last week to discuss some of HOME Line’s current initiatives, I feel more prepared to offer my services.

With several other HOME Line interns, I anticipate being very involved in grass-roots outreach. By helping to organize several large-scale door-knocking projects, I hope to meet with low-income tenants in many of our communities.  In addition, I am hoping to help HOME Line compile a guide titled “The ABC’s of Affordable Housing.”  Offering clear, concise advice for anybody desiring to become an advocate for affordable housing, this guide will be available in both print form and electronically through HOME Line’s website.

My time at HOME Line will conclude with an in-depth research of a specific legislative district.  I will examine the unique challenges faced by tenants in this district and prepare district-specific fact sheets for use by other tenant advocates and legislators.  Again, I am very excited to work as an intern this summer and I look forward to meeting others dedicated to HOME Line’s diverse array of initiatives.
