How to call your legislator

Calling your legislator is a powerful method of communication for any housing advocate. By directly asking your legislator to support a specific bill or program, you show that tenants are concerned with current housing policy issues. By calling your legislator, you make the politician increasingly aware that he/she must cater to the concerns of Minnesota renters.

Steps to calling your legislator:

  1. Outline the main points you want to make in your conversation with the legislator. If you are calling to discuss a specific bill, know the number or title of the legislation.
  2. Locate the phone number of legislator you would like to reach.
  3. After dialing, you will most likely speak with the legislator’s assistant. Be clear and specific in the reasons for your call. Describe your personal experience as a renter. Register your issue with the legislator’s aide. If so desired, you can ask the representative to give you a call later.
