How to call your legislator
Calling your legislator is a powerful method of communication for any housing advocate. By directly asking your legislator to support a specific bill or program, you show that tenants are concerned with current housing policy issues. By calling your legislator, you make the politician increasingly aware that he/she must cater to the concerns of Minnesota renters.
Steps to calling your legislator:
- Outline the main points you want to make in your conversation with the legislator. If you are calling to discuss a specific bill, know the number or title of the legislation.
- Locate the phone number of legislator you would like to reach.
- After dialing, you will most likely speak with the legislator’s assistant. Be clear and specific in the reasons for your call. Describe your personal experience as a renter. Register your issue with the legislator’s aide. If so desired, you can ask the representative to give you a call later.
