How to meet with your legislator

Meeting with your legislator is a very valuable method used to express ideas, opinions, and thoughts concerning Minnesota housing policy. In speaking with the legislator, your goal is to give him or her an understanding of your concerns as a renter and gain his or her support for your issue.

Steps to meeting with your legislator:

  1. Request a meeting with your legislator by calling the legislator’s office. Briefly state the issue you would like to discuss and suggest possible times for a meeting.
  2. Prepare for the meeting with your legislator by outlining the issue you would like to discuss, the challenges you face as a tenant, and the changes you envision for the future.
  3. In your meeting with the legislator, introduce yourself, and then engage the legislator in discussion about the issue of concern. In describing your experiences, be brief, concise, and specific. Use personal examples to discuss the challenges faced by Minnesota renters.
  4. Thank your legislator for meeting with you and answer any questions he/she may have.
