A series of articles recently published in the Pioneer Press highlights the havoc two infamous landlords wreak upon tenants, city inspectors, management companies, and contractors they hire to do work at their properties. The brothers Hyder Jaweed and Asgher Ali have so far managed to evade legal accountability for neglecting their buildings and failing to pay employees and contractors. One of their tactics that makes them so successful at this is their “shell game” approach to business. They use many aliases and Limited Liability Partnerships, of which, they regularly swap and sell among family members, making it difficult to successfully sue them (since defendants have to be properly named in any lawsuit). http://www.twincities.com/ci_17101427
The following case relates to Center Pointe Apartments in Brooklyn Center at the time when Hyder Jaweed and Asgher Ali owned the property. Representing themselves, two contractors, who performed maintenance work at the apartment, brought a lawsuit against the brothers (who have an attorney) because they never paid the contractors for their work. The case shows that Hyder Jaweed’s “corporate veil” of Brooklyn Center Leased Housing Associates Limited Partnership and Brooklyn Center Housing LLC can be “pierced” by the court–meaning that in certain unique cases, the shareholders and investors in a corporation can be held personally liable for the actions (or inaction) of the corporation. In this case, the court allows the two contractors to hold accountable Hyder Jaweed (but not Asgher Ali, this time) personally for debts that the corporation owed the contractors. We believe this case provides an opportunity for tenants, contractors, and others who have been harmed by the landlords to sue them personally; given that many of their corporations are able to move finances around to escape from court judgments.

i lived their for 2years this last time and never went through so much hell with water damage to my bedroom and bathroom along with bedbugs just in the last 6months i lived their it took them over 5 wks just to replace carpet in my hallway to my bedrooms and bathroom after a major leak in the bathroom ceiling. We have many scars and i had to lose all my furniture to the bedbugs but i was never compensated for my inconvenience. My electric bill also went sky high after they installed the electric heaters i ended up paying 400.00 a month for my electric bills compared to less than 100.00. They deserve to lose everything then be made to live like their tenants with all the roaches bedbugs and mold problems.
