Police are frequently the “first responders” when dealing with landlord/tenant issues. This P.O.S.T. approved course (3 P.O.S.T. hours) focuses on criminal aspects of landlord-tenant law. The primary intended audience is police officers who have to decide when landlord-tenant law either allows or requires them to take action regarding tenants or landlords under criminal law. Some other aspects of landlord-tenant law regularly facing police officers, such as forfeiture law, are discussed. Course Highlights include:
- When is a tenant’s guest committing trespass?
- When is a landlord subject to arrest for locking out a tenant?
- When is a landlord subject to arrest for holding a tenant’s personal property hostage?
The class will be conducted by HOME Line’s Senior Housing Attorney Paul Birnberg, who has given 16 of these classes throughout Minnesota. Non police officers are welcome to attend and many non officers have found the seminar helpful. Attendees receive a manual of about 30 pages of discussion of the issues plus well over 100 pages of copies of relevant statutes and rules. The seminar typically includes some lecture with PowerPoint, a couple of videos illustrating legal points, and many questions and answers. The manual plus some related material is available on our website here.
Cost: $24 (includes copy of manual). Register & pay online here:
