Overview of Organization and Position
HOME Line is a non-profit, non-partisan, statewide tenant advocacy organization with over three decades of experience providing free legal advice, education, and organizing support to renters. HOME Line’s free and confidential tenant hotline has advised over 330,000 renter households throughout the state since 1992, and currently averages around 1,700 new client households per month.
HOME Line is seeking an individual for a part-time Grassroots Policy Organizer position. This position has flexible hours requirements up to 30 hours per week; however, the typical workload will require work between 20-25 hours per week.
As the Grassroots Policy Organizer, you will be responsible for working with renters at the grassroots level to build a base of engaged renters to advocate around proposed renter protection policies during the 2025 Legislative Session. This position reports to HOME Line’s Managing Organizer and will work closely with the Public Policy Director, the Organizing Team, and external organizational partners.
The workplace consists of a typical office environment (HOME Line’s office is located just off the METRO Blue Line in Bloomington), with full or hybrid work-from-home/in-office schedule opportunities available. Time spent on the computer/online is approximately 90%, with some in-person meeting/event opportunities. What you’ll do:
- Engage with tenants throughout the state (primarily via phone, but also email and in-person) to highlight how policy changes could improve their lives.
- Prioritize engagement in areas where HOME Line has strong relationships and where strategic leverage is identified as a need.
- Provide training, guidance, and support for tenants to share their experiences and the impact of proposed public policy on their housing stability and quality of their homes.
- Lead the collection and assist with the distribution of tenant stories.
- Coach and encourage Minnesota renters to contact their elected officials using their experiences as the rationale for the desired legislation.
- Train leaders on other methods of bringing their stories to the media and other public settings (e.g., testifying in front of a legislative committee, writing a letter to the editor, etc.).
- Support tenants at legislative session hearings and meetings as needed
Qualifications:
We seek candidates who are self-motivated, committed to equity, and passionate about housing justice. Preferred candidates will have experience and strong skill sets in the following areas:
- Strong background in housing, community organizing, and/or campaign mobilization
- Ability to connect with individuals from many different backgrounds and identities.
- Superior organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups and one-on-one and comfort with door-knocking and cold-calling.
- Ability to discern and navigate power dynamics and manage conflict.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to facilitate meetings, and speak in public forums.
- Access to reliable transportation.
- Language skills in Spanish, Somali, Hmong desired
Compensation: starting pay rate between $21 – $24 per hour (commensurate with experience). Part-time employees are eligible for some benefits including: sick/vacation time, holidays, and more.
