If you are a renter, a portion of your rent is used to pay property taxes. You may qualify for a Renter’s Property Tax Refund depending on your income and rent paid. This is also sometimes referred to as a Renter’s Credit. Find out who qualifies here.
Beginning in 2025 (with 2024 taxes), renters no longer file a Renter’s Property Tax Refund return (Form M1PR), and instead claim the Credit as part of their Individual Income Tax return. Additional information is below and included in the video.
Please note: tax filing due dates noted in this video are for 2024 taxes.
For 2025 taxes, you should receive a CRP by January 31, 2026 and tax returns are due April 15, 2026.

Before you File
Renters will need a completed Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) from their landlord. The CRP shows how much rent was paid during the previous year. A landlord is supposed to give each tenant a completed CRP by January 31st every year. If their landlord does not provide it by February 1st, renters may request a Rent Paid Affidavit (RPA) from the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

When to File
If you are a renter, you will claim the Renter’s Credit as part of your Minnesota Individual Income Tax return (Form M1). The due date for 2025 tax returns is April 15, 2026.
If you need help preparing your taxes, you may qualify for free tax return preparation. The Minnesota Department of Revenue has a tool to find Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or AARP Tax-Aide programs here.
The due date for last years taxes (2024 returns) was April 15, 2025. If you did not claim the Renter’s Credit when you filed your income tax return, you must amend your income tax return to claim it.
