HOME Line’s staff & board are tremendously grateful to former HOME Line Senior Housing Attorney Paul Birnberg, who recently donated $120,000 to support a variety of HOME Line’s efforts in advocating that the Minnesota State Legislature (and local cities) enact critical tenant protection legislation—Just Cause eviction restrictions and protections against Source of Income discrimination (refusing to rent to tenants receiving housing assistance such as housing choice vouchers).
During his tenure at HOME Line, Mr. Birnberg advised over 25,000 renter households about their housing situations. In his time with HOME Line, Paul helped prevent the eviction of over 1,700 Minnesota families and helped tenants recover over $3.6 million in wrongfully withheld deposits and rent refunds after living in substandard conditions. He also researched & published multiple guides and studies on rental housing topics, trained and presented CLEs on a variety of legal topics, assisted with critically important litigation impacting the rights of Minnesota renters, and much more. His contributions to the tenant/landlord field have had significant, positive impacts for renters throughout the state, as he continues to devote time, energy, and resources to these causes (for example, see his legislative blog/newsletter here).
Mr. Birnberg’s contribution demonstrates the scope of influence that HOME Line’s legal, organizing, and advocacy work has throughout the state, and we are excited to have this amazing opportunity to further the cause of tenant rights.
Thank you, Paul, for your commitment to and trust of HOME Line—we are honored that you’ve chosen to champion the tenant organizing and advocacy work of our staff, as we wholeheartedly endeavor to get these critically important protections across the finish line!
As we celebrate this unprecedented contribution, we ask you to please consider your own donation to support HOME Line’s public policy and tenant organizing. Help us continue to make Minnesota a better, more welcoming place for renters through comprehensive updates to tenant protections throughout the state, while ensuring Minnesota tenants have the resources, knowledge, and opportunities to enforce their rights and improve their homes.
