Isa is serving with the Central Area Neighborhood Development Organization (CANDO). Each month, they host an event called Tenant Get Together in which renters from the Central, Bancroft, Powderhorn, and Bryant neighborhoods can share a meal and connect with other tenants. Each gathering features a tenant-specific discussion, and previous meetings have included: Minnesota tenant/landlord law, repair clinic, renter resource connection, and a movie screening.
For Isa, the Tenant Get Together series is a personal connection to CANDO’s larger vision of “organizing community to build an urban landscape that heals, not harms by eliminating systemic oppression.” Said Isa, “I have a responsibility to share this knowledge I’ve gained as a VISTA. These gatherings help us build our own solutions to displacement and gentrification and empower renters through knowledge and connection to resources.”
The next Tenant Get Together is June 24, from 6-8 pm at Hosmer Library. Food will be provided, and childcare and interpretation are available upon request.
