Renter’s Property Tax Refund program, often known as Renter’s Credit, is a tax refund issued to many low- and moderate-income tenants in Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Budget Project, “The Renters’ Credit is a property tax refund for … renters whose property taxes are considered high for their income level. It refunds a portion of the property taxes that renters pay through their rents. The Renter’s Credit is targeted to those with lower incomes and prioritizes those whose property taxes make up a larger share of their budget.”
The Minnesota Legislature is currently discussing an increase and expansion to the Renter’s Credit. However, some legislators may not be aware of what this credit means or realize the essential role it plays in many tenants’ lives. This tax relief helps tenants across the state afford essential items, including, for example, groceries and medications. In order to potentially increase the Renter’s Credit, we must ensure politicians understand the value it holds for so many.
HOME Line needs to hear from renters to inform legislators about the good that the Renter’s Credit provides. We want legislators to see how expanding the Renter’s Credit could help their constituents afford life’s essentials. If you receive the Renter’s Credit, let us know how it is useful to you by responding to a quick survey:
Feel free to pass along this information to other renters!
