HOME Line Board Member Job Description

Organization Mission: HOME Line provides free and low-cost legal, organizing, education, and advocacy services so that tenants throughout Minnesota can solve their housing problems.

Position Summary: As stewards of HOME Line’s mission, Board members provide strategic leadership, ensure financial oversight, support the Co-Executive Directors, and uphold effective governance. Board members are active ambassadors for the organization, leveraging their experience, networks, and insights to advance tenant advocacy and housing justice across Minnesota.

Board Member Responsibilities: Each Board member contributes to the collective governance of the organization. While certain tasks may be assigned to committees or individual members, each board members have the responsibility to ensure the full board carries out the following roles and duties:

1.  Lead Strategically

  • Learn and stay informed about HOME Line’s mission, services, and strategic goals
  • Participate in developing and refining the organization’s strategic direction.
  • Monitor organizational performance and support strategic adaptations as needed.
  • Help the organization navigate change and emerging challenges in housing justice.

2.  Ensure Financial Stability

  • Approve and oversee HOME Line’s annual budget.
  • Review and understand financial reports.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial and legal obligations, including tax filings, audits, and registrations.

3.  Be an Ambassador

  • Promote HOME Line’s mission in the community.
  • Participate in fundraising and attend public events and campaigns.
  • Assist with donor engagement, including writing thank-you notes.

4.  Support and Supervise the Co-Executive Directors

  • Participate in hiring, supporting, evaluating, and setting compensation for the Co-Executive Directors
  • Serve as a sounding board and strategic partner to the Co-Executive Directors.
  • Help ensure that succession plans are in place.

5.  Ensure Healthy Governance

  • Recruit, onboard, and mentor new Board members.
  • Review bylaws, policies, and compliance documents regularly.
  • Attend and prepare for Board and committee meetings.
  • Participate in Board self-assessments and capacity-building efforts.

Desired Qualities

  • Commitment to tenant advocacy and housing justice.
  • Willingness to engage across diverse communities and perspectives
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and listening skills.
  • Relevant professional expertise and/or lived experience.
  • Dependability and follow-through on committments.

Length of Term: Three years, renewable for a second term pending Board approval.

Time Commitment: Board members are expected to spend approximately 1-3 hours per month on board work. That includes attending board meetings and being part of at least a committee or task force. Being available for consultation and engagement outside of scheduled meetings as needed.
