Turn Up the Support for Minnesota Renters

October 6, 2026 by Eric Hauge

Help us raise $20,000 before the end of 2026 so that we can keep serving renters across the state: homelinemn.org/donate

🌡️
October 1 is the start of Minnesota’s heating season.

From October 1 through April 30, Minnesota landlords are required to maintain rental housing at a minimum temperature of 68 degrees.
That wasn’t always the case: HOME Line spent years advocating for a statewide standard because renters should not have different basic protections depending on what city they live in.
But having a law and being able to use that law are two different things. When a renter’s heat isn’t working, HOME Line can help them understand their rights and what steps they can take.
This year, we’re raising $20,000 from individual donors to support HOME Line’s work with Minnesota renters.

🔥 Year end goal: $20,000

💪Minnesota renters keep our communities going.

They raise families, care for neighbors, go to work, run businesses, volunteer, build communities, and make homes in every corner of the state.

Renting is home, and renters deserve to have clear information about their rights and a place to turn when something goes wrong.

That’s why HOME Line provides free, confidential legal advice to renters throughout Minnesota. We also work with renters to advocate for stronger protections and better housing policies.

As we head into another Minnesota heating season, we’re grateful for the renters who reach out, speak up, organize, and push for change.

🌡 We’re raising $20,000 from individual donors this year to support that work.

A heads up for renters contacting HOME Line’s Hotline: our current response time is 1–2 weeks.

We know that’s a long time to wait when you have a question or problem with your housing, and we appreciate your patience. Our staff is working hard to respond to calls and emails as quickly as possible while helping renters across Minnesota understand their rights and options.

We’re currently trending about 8% above last year’s record number of new clients, which means even more renters are turning to HOME Line for help. We’re glad renters know they can turn to us, but we need the capacity to respond more quickly. Individual donations help HOME Line build the capacity to respond to more renters and reduce wait times.

If you believe Minnesota renters should have access to free, confidential legal advice when they need it, please consider making a donation today.

🌡 We’re working toward our $20,000 year-end fundraising goal to support HOME Line’s work with renters across Minnesota.
