If you are a renter then a portion of your rent is used to pay property taxes. You may qualify for a Renter’s Property Tax Refund depending on your income and rent paid. This is also sometimes referred to as a Renter’s Credit. Find out who qualifies at https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/renters-property-tax-refund.
Before you File
Renters will need a completed Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) from their landlord. The CRP shows how much rent was paid during the previous year. A landlord is supposed to give each tenant a completed CRP by January 31st every year. If their landlord does not provide it by March 1st, renters may request a Rent Paid Affidavit (RPA) from the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

When to File
Tenants may file up to one year after the due date (meaning a tenant has until August 2025 to file for rent paid in 2023 tax year).
Things to Remember
- Not every renter qualifies for a Renter’s Credit
- The Renter’s Credit is filed separately from income taxes (for now)
- Changes to this process will be coming in 2025!
