July, 2023 was yet another incredibly busy month for the tenant hotline. We took 3,307 total calls (new plus follow-up calls) last month, a 7% increase over July, 2022. For the year, the hotline has taken 12% over the 2022 total through July. While new calls are up 3% for the year (and last year was the all-time record busiest new call year for the hotline), the big surge in calls this year continues to come from follow-up calls, where we’ve had a 21% increase over 2022’s record number.
Here are the top 10 reasons for calls last month. Evictions re-took the top spot after repairs had a one-month surge in June to sit atop the reasons why tenants called us. In ‘normal’ times (pre-pandemic), repairs were the top reason for tenants calling our tenant hotline since opening. Beginning last year, evictions took over the top reason for tenants contacting us—fueled largely by the phase-out of COVID-related eviction moratoriums. But the eviction numbers haven’t abated much this year, which is on pace to surpass any eviction case numbers from recent memory.
