HOME Line is hiring an Americorps VISTA Tenant Hotline position. Strengthen one of MN’s largest tenant advocacy organizations while improving access to justice for renters statewide. Build systems that create lasting change for thousands of households each year.
Program Description: HOME Line is a Minnesota nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing safe, stable, and affordable rental housing by providing free legal advice, education, organizing, and advocacy for renters statewide. For more than 30 years, HOME Line has helped hundreds of thousands of Minnesota renters understand and enforce their rights while working to improve housing systems.
As the Hotline VISTA, you’ll work behind the scenes to strengthen the capacity of HOME Line’s statewide Tenant Hotline, which serves more than 20,000 renter households annually. You’ll gain firsthand experience in nonprofit operations, legal services, program evaluation, data analysis, and systems improvement while collaborating with attorneys, tenant advocates, organizers, and nonprofit leaders.
During your service year, you’ll receive extensive training in Minnesota landlord-tenant law, trauma-informed communication, client confidentiality, and nonprofit capacity building. You’ll develop professional skills in project management, evaluation, process improvement, and organizational development while creating sustainable tools that continue benefiting renters long after your service ends.
HOME Line is located in Bloomington, Minnesota, with a flexible hybrid work environment. VISTA members participate in a supportive cohort, receive ongoing professional development, attend monthly trainings and networking opportunities, and build relationships with nonprofit leaders across Minnesota. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in nonprofit leadership, public interest law, housing justice, public policy, research, or program evaluation.
Member Duties: Complete comprehensive training on HOME Line’s programs and Tenant Hotline before assessing opportunities to strengthen hotline operations. Learn hotline systems and participate in supervised hotline service to understand renter experiences and organizational needs. Evaluate workflows, callback procedures, reporting practices, and operational systems to identify opportunities for improvement. Design, pilot, and document sustainable workflow improvements that increase efficiency and strengthen service delivery. Develop tools to measure client outcomes, financial benefits retained by tenants, and long-term program impact. Create reports, evaluation resources, and documentation that support grant reporting, fundraising, organizational planning, and future staff training. Successful candidates are organized, collaborative, curious, adaptable, and interested in using data and systems to improve community services.
Compensation & Benefits: Americorps VISTA Living Allowance (for Hennepin County: $957.46 bi-weekly), benefits, and end-of-service Education Award or Cash Stipend (more information about all Americorps benefits here). Additionally, HOME Line provides a $600/month housing stipend.
