Last month the tenant hotline took, once again, a record number of total calls for that month. It was our busiest May ever. We took 2,992 total calls (new plus follow-ups), topping last May’s total of 2,807. For the year, we’re up 2,180 calls total over last year’s total at this time, a 14% increase in total call volume this year.
For only the second month ever, the number of our follow-up calls was higher than the new call total. In May, we took 1,553 follow-up calls and 1,439 new calls. Last November was the only other month this has ever occurred.
How can follow-up calls eclipse new calls? Many issues span several months, so a new call we took in April (or even earlier this year) might lead to several follow-up calls or emails as the tenant’s situation progresses. As mentioned in several of these newsletters, landlord/tenant legal issues are increasingly complex, especially as facts and situations shift.
Here are the top 10 reasons for new calls for May.
